Composing Photos as Art



I. How does the Rule of Thirds and the Fill the Frame Rule apply to the photo?

The Rule of Thirds applies to this photo because, in this photo, you are able to 3 different lineups. The first line includes the man walking in the background, the Second line includes the shadowed building, while the third line includes the up close Garbage Can. The Framing in this photo does apply to the Fill the Frame Rule because the image is fully capturing a street in Harlem, New York in the 1940s without leaving much of the image clear.

II. How does creative lighting apply to the photo?

Creative Lighting in this photography includes the light visible at the end of the buildings. This lighting can be used to describe a metaphor such as “The Light at the End of the Tunnel” which could represent the light of the Harlem Renaissance.

III. How does the photographers’ viewpoint express an idea?

The Photographers’ viewpoint expresses the idea of brightness at the start of the Harlem Rennaisance and how it was a starting point for the expression of African Americans.

IV. How does color or lack of color affect the photo?

The lack of color affects this photo because through the photo being black and white, you can really tell and it seems that this photo was taken during the 1940s-1950s which would “capture the movement” in real-time.

The Camera Shot is a Point of view shot because in the distance we see a man walking forward towards the brightness which could possibly be the main focus of the photo since it draws the viewer’s attention. We can also see a garbage can close which someone who is walking towards that direction would see.

The Camera angle is Low Angle.

The Rule of Thirds applies to this photo because throughout the photo the viewer is able to see an even division of the background and people.

II. How does creative lighting apply to the photo?

Creative Lighting in this photography includes how the people are contrasted against the light. This means that the background is a clearer color while the people are a black contrasting color.

III. How does the photographers’ viewpoint express an idea?

The Photographers’ viewpoint expresses the idea of children growing up through rough times in the United States.

IV. How does color or lack of color affect the photo?

The lack of color really brings out the emotions that were felt during this time. This era was the recovery of World War 2 so the people are slowly returning back to life before the war.

The photo is evenly divided into 3 parts and the Frame is filled with the background.

There is creative lighting in this photo because we see yellow brightness which is assumedly the sun in the background.

III. How does the photographers’ viewpoint express an idea?

The viewpoint was to express the idea that prisoners could have had a bright future however, they performed crimes and now they’re stuck in jail. The police officer represents sympathy towards the prisoners since he has his head down.

IV. How does color or lack of color affect the photo?

The Color affects this photo because since it’s shining at the prisoners, it shows how the prisoners could have had a bright future but because of some actions, they are stuck behind bars in jail.
